More About Us ... We normally meet on the first and third Tuesday evenings of each month, now at the home of Sue and Richard. The original (Valley Way) group formed from an Alpha course held in the late 1990s with new members since joining. A warm welcome is extended to everyone and we actively encourage new members to join us. The evening usually begins with coffee and chat before settling down to a bible study. Over the past years, we have studied the Ten Commandments and their relevance today, the "Lord's prayer", Philippians, James and Romans. One evening we watched a video on tourism and its negative effects on the local population. Another time we watched a video on Members of Parliament and their response to global issues like third world debt.
At the end of the evening everyone is encouraged to write down prayer requests, which we then take away promising to pray for that particular need. This is a very adaptable group, it is never the same from week to week because of the nature of our busy lives. If you are reading this and thinking "I've always meant to join a house group" then please speak to Sue - we would love to have you join us. |

November 2004 update
It's amazing how many red herrings can come up in a Bible study! There are as many differing opinions as there are members in our group; our numbers can fluctuate from 6 to as many as 13 of us in an evening. At the moment we are studying "A journey of the heart" by Kate Hayes, which is subtitled "a pilgrim's guide to prayer". In a sense it is just that, as it starts with the basics and then moves on to the meatier issues - which is probably not an appropriate analogy to the section on fasting!! As such, it is suitable for both new and more mature Christians. It is a very well-thought out and thought-provoking study which lends itself to throwing out the interesting sidetracks which many groups love. Suffice it to say that although there are only 6 studies in the book, we have been following it since we finished Colossians in the spring, and still have 2 studies to go!! On the topic of prayer, about a year ago we began the practice of beginning our sessions together with a time of open prayer. We found that if we left it until the end we would run out of time. Since then, it has been encouraging to see each other growing in confidence in praying together, as well as experiencing prayers answered. Continuing the group's tradition, we also elect to pray for each other during the next fortnight; we do this by writing our own (or a friend's or family member's) prayer requests on a card. All the cards are shuffled and then we each draw one out at random and take it home to pray over. It's amazing that I never pick my own card... Sue
