Some foreign sailors were shipwrecked on a small island. They were treated with great kindness and hospitality, and in gratitude they taught the islanders a beautiful and intricate knitting pattern.
The sailors were from the Spanish Armada, and the island was Fair Isle - the name the pattern bears to this day. Another traveller who left his mark was Brendon, the Irish Saint, who carried the message of Christianity to Scotland and Brittany. Besides spreading the Gospel, it is said that he also left behind this little prayer, "Oh God, help me, for my boat is so small and Your sea is so great." The Spanish sailors left a beautiful knitting pattern. Brendon left the word of God and a brief but telling prayer. |
